Nintendo's Wii Sports heads the nominations for this year's British Academy Video Games Awards.

The popular title has been shortlisted for seven prizes, including game of the year, innovation, sports and multiplayer.

Crackdown, Gears of War, Okami and God of War 2 have all scooped five nominations each.

The awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday 23 October at Battersea Evolution in Battersea Park.

Wii Sports will go head-to-head with Football Manager 2008, Colin McRae: DiRT, FIFA 08, MotorStorm and Virtua Tennis 3 for the sports award.

The game, which allows gamers to physically take part in the virtual sports, has been shortlisted alongside flOw, Okami, Super Paper Mario, The Eye of Judgement and Trauma Center: Second Opinion in the innovation category.

The multiplayer prize will see Wii Sports compete with the likes of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, World in Conflict and Battlefield 2142.

Other categories this year include original score, casual, strategy and simulation, technical achievement and gameplay.

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter won the prestigious game of the year prize at last year's British Academy Video Games Awards.
