21st April 2008

Pope Benedict XVI has ended his first visit to America with an open-air Mass at New York's Yankee baseball stadium.

The Pope's six-day tour has received huge media attention in the US and attracted bumper crowds.

Pope Benedict arrived at Andrews Air Force Base on Tuesday before holding talks with US President George W Bush at the White House, Washington D.C most famous residence, a day later.

He addressed UN delegates on Friday, and in a speech in New York’s St Patrick's Cathedral on Saturday, the Pope talked for the first time about growing up under the "monster" of Nazism.

Earlier on Sunday morning, Pope Benedict visited Ground Zero in New York, the site of two of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks.

The trip has been hailed as a massive success by many analysts.
